Euthanasia may be an option after taking into consideration your pet’s diagnosis, treatment options, response to treatment and most importantly, the quality of life (QOL). Euthanasia can be a very humane choice when your pet is not responding well to treatment and its quality of life is in decline. That is to say, it no longer enjoys the daily things that once give it pleasure – food, spending time with you for cuddles or lap time, lying in the sunshine. When you have made this difficult decision to perform humane euthanasia, your pet will have an IV catheter placed in its leg, where the injection will be given. Sometimes, your pet may be sedated to help with anxiety. It will be given an IV injection of a strong drug that is simply an overdose of anesthetic that sends them off “to sleep” very quickly and painlessly.
